I dont know what the future of publishing holds, but I can make some predictions. I know publishers will concentrate more on web content more than printed content. However I cant imagine Amazon Kindle or other e-books replacing books , and I’m sure that pen casting probably wont catch on, sorry Professor Cost. The print side of the newspaper has just been maintained. Unfortunately, it will be reduced to local news papers and will most likely be free like in most big cities.

Digital Print on Demand going to become a standard for the industry. The downside to this is that the whole process is likely to be almost completely automated, and have a business model like Color Centric. this reliance on automation will likely cut jobs for regular unskilled laborers. The upsid to Digital Print on Demand books is that it will make the job easier for publishing companies. Money would no longer be wasted if a book is published and doesn’t sell well. The book is just stored would just be stored on a digital database would be no leftover copies to get rid of or mark down.

What are the challenges and opportunities for print publications like magazines and newspapers when they try to cross over to the Internet?

The cross over from traditional media to the Internet means that information will be able to be produced faster. Much of the information that readers seek will not be cluttered by information that people dont want. The change from paper to digital content will also change the economic structure of the business as well. All of the income earned by the magizine of newspaper publishers would most likely come from adveritisments, because there would be no need for people to pay for thier information anymore.

What role does the daily paper play in society

The daily Newspaper is not dead yet, but it’s on life support. This is because the demographic that reads the news paper are growing older, and sadly dying off.

According to http://www.slate.com/ ”The Washington Post, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, Newsday, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and scores of smaller papers have downsized their staffs in recent months. About 70 newsroom staffers and 100 non-newsroom employees are exiting the Post through the buyout door, according to the paper’s June 1st.”

So where are the younger readers of the news paper? most of them are doing exactly what I am doing, spending thier life on thier computers.

What are people willing to pay for. This topic is what investors and businesses ask all the time. It is also a hard thing to gauge because of the many variables businesses have to account for in their customers. These things include but are not limited to the consumers age, timing of the release of a product, and how many of the same products or services are available. They build business models, and form focus groups to find out the what and how much people are willing to pay for anything.

The answer to the question “What people are willing to pay for?” changes rapidly. The news paper industry is an example of this. just 20 years ago 90% of american families recieved the news paper, but ever since the rise of the internet that number has gone down over 40%. This is because the internet gives us information faster than a news paper, plus other services. It is also because our society is begining to go paperless, all of our information, bills and documents are digital now. Unfortunatly the news paper does’nt keep up with this trend.
